GRENADA, THE GRENADINES
This small nation comprises three islands: Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Grenada is by far the largest of the three at 12 miles wide and 21 miles long. It is a beautiful island, strewn with aromatic spice trees and rare tropical flowers. Fringed with heavenly beaches, and dotted with pretty, quaint towns, this verdant island produces one-third of the world's nutmeg, as well as ginger, cinnamon and cocoa. These seductive scents fill the air at Grenada's vibrant Saturday markets and drift through the dense forests. Away from the beaches, cascading rivers and waterfalls weave their way through thick rainforests to hot sulphur springs and breathtakingly beautiful crater lakes. Grenada's capital, St. George's, is widely considered to be the most captivating city in the Caribbean. A rainbow of warehouses and traditional red-roofed shops and homes outlines the beautifully curved harbour.
Grenada's physical allure is enhanced by its wonderful history and vibrant cultural heritage. Local festivals, fairs and markets remain a fundamental part of life on Grenada, and the easy rhythm of the island and the warmth of its residents create an atmosphere that is unique to this wonderful part of the world.
The Grenadines consist of a string of idyllic, sun-blessed islands that stretch from Grenada in the south to St Vincent in the north, where secluded coves, spectacular coral reefs, rainforest hiking and superb sailing conditions are among the main attractions. The private 1,400 acre island of Mustique has gained an international reputation as an exclusive hideaway of the rich and famous.
