MOROCCO

Morocco is a spicy mixture of Arab, Berber, European and African cultures jostling together in an old fortified town set alongside a modern capital. Sat at the foot of the Atlas Mountains is its most chaotic city, Marrakech, which lures travellers from all over the world.

Dining

You'll find the healthy main national dish of couscous and tagine (slow cooked meat and vegetables) everywhere. Excitingly, radical new Moroccan food is on the rise, such as that found at super-chic restaurant Le Fondouk. Wine and beer are rarely found outside tourist restaurants.

Culture

A highlight of any visit is Djemma el Fna, Marrakech's main open space, alive night and day with snake charmers, storytellers, scribes, dancers and herbalists. In the evenings, the square becomes an extraordinary entertainment venue, thronging with acrobats, magicians, transvestite dancers and semi-mystical musicians. And none of it performed deliberately for tourists.

Shopping

Marrakech is famous for its souks - mile after mile of tightly-packed, colourful shops divided into sections, each with its own speciality, selling all sorts from spices to ironwork. Ignore guides who say they'll secure cheaper prices for you when haggling.

Getting around

Once in the medina, everything can be seen on foot. For exploring more of the city, there are plenty of buses and taxis. An alternative, romantic way to travel is by horse-drawn calèche.
