MUSCAT

Lying along the Gulf of Oman, Muscat - the country's capital city - is a truly enchanting destination. World-famous landmarks may not stand among its historic, once-sleepy streets, but perhaps that's where its deep charm lies. There's an ancient unaffectedness about Muscat that leaves its mark.

Dining

From moonlit barbecues on Qantab Road to entire afternoons in amiable teahouses, dining in Muscat is a romantic pastime. Good Lebanese, continental and Italian restaurants can be discovered in Ruwi. Trying a shwarma kebab or sipping rich coffee at Café Camilia is a must.

Culture

The eastern area of the city known as Muttrah is where the splendour lies with its superb corniche encircling a charming bay and a dozen golden sand beaches. The seaside, ceremonial palace of H.M.Sultan Qaboos Said, nestled between steep rocky hills, offers a spectacular sight, especially at night. The two old Portuguese forts of Jelali and Merani also make for rewarding exploration.

Shopping

Haggle over dates, mother of pearl and sandalwood in the landmark Souk Muttrah. For gleaming boutiques, and modern malls of designer names, head to Qurm.

Getting around

Muscat has a comprehensive system of service taxis and microbuses. Taxis don't have meters; fix the rate before you get in.

Bahrain and Doha
HOW ABOUT

Bahrain & Doha

Bahrain's reputation as a relatively liberal modern Gulf state has made it a favourite of travellers while Doha's national pastime seems to be sitting in the palm-lined waterfront cafés.

HOW ABOUT

Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi - where palms trees stand between imposing mirrored skyscrapers. With its laidback vibe, Abu Dhabi feels more distinctly Arabian than its vibrant neighbour Dubai.
