SAN FRANCISCO
Dining
San Francisco has more restaurants per capita than any other American city, hence the creative culinary scene. It's also famous for its seafood. A large Asian population means good Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Korean restaurants.
Culture
The landmark Golden Gate Bridge affords spectacular views of the bay and city, as does a ferry from Pier 41 to Alcatraz Island, the former prison and the city's biggest attraction. Other places to explore include the Museum of Modern Art, Palace of the Legion of Honour, and Lombard Street, San Francisco's most crooked with nine hairpin bends.
Shopping
Forget sprawling malls - San Francisco shopping is done in hundreds of boutiques and secondhand stores. Union Square promises some of the finest retail therapy.
Getting around
Muni light rail, cable cars and buses get you almost anywhere in the city. Available from visitor information centres, a Muni passport allows unlimited travel. Need a taxi? Just hail one.
