SHANGHAI

Shanghai has become the latest "It" city of the world - sophisticated, innovative, exciting. For all its glossy modernity, its colonial legacy gives it an East meets West character all of its own.

SHANGHAI

Dining

The city has five food streets lined with Chinese restaurants of every kind: Huang He Lu, Wujiang Lu, Yunnan Lu, Yuyuan Zhi Lu, and Zhapu Lu. Alternatively, many of Shanghai's top restaurants are in its hotels.

Culture

Frenchtown, and The Bund - the colonial riverfront - are the best places to see the remnants of Shanghai's decadent colonial past. The People's Square where residents gather at sunrise to perform tai chi is well worth a visit. While the best way to check out both banks of the Huangpu River and their sights is to take a guided river tour.

Shopping

Shanghai is well known among the Chinese as the place to shop in China. Nanjing Lu, said to be the busiest shopping street in China, runs through the heart of downtown Shanghai. The Bund houses Armani's flagship store.

Getting around

The metro and light railway system is excellent. Taxis are cheap, and only residents can hire a car.

WEATHER

CLIMATE

Shanghai tends to be warmer than Beijing, but has more rainfall year round. Winters can be freezing while spring brings warmth. April to May is one of the best times to visit weather-wise, along with autumn (late September to mid-November).
