TOKYO

From the futuristic new cityscapes of Odaiba to the busy shopping centre of Shibuya, Tokyo's high-energy, visual overload, makes even New York seem like a sleepy town. Very different to Western capitals, what makes it is its people - a quarter of Japan's entire population jostling for space, day and night.

TOKYO

Dining

From steaming street stalls and local sushi houses to Japanese banquets and Michelin-starred haute cuisine, Tokyo serves it all, and competition is fierce. As well as a meal that's out of this world, the pleasure of this city's restaurants lies in watching its chefs at work, like those at Sushi Mizutani (three Michelin stars) in Ginza.

Culture

Tokyo is the best place in the world to experience Japanese performing arts, and to be part of a traditional tea ceremony. Almost everything of interest to visitors lies either along or close to the Japan Railway (JR) Yamanote line, the rail loop that circles central Tokyo.

Shopping

Tokyo's most exclusive shopping area is Ginza, graced by chic department stores, traditional shops, small galleries and showrooms where you can test the latest technology.

Getting around

Public transport is fast, efficient, frequent, safe, and clean. The main services are JR trains, Toei (Metropolitan) subway lines, Tokyo Metro subway lines, private railways, and buses. Subway lines are colour-coded and most stations have a map and fare tables in English. Trains and subways run from about 5am until around 1am.
