Amanusa lies in splendid seclusion beside the Bali Golf and Country Club, separating it from the ocean, on the country's verdant southern peninsula, just two kilometres off the eastern tip of Java. Nearby, the bougainvillea-lined streets of Nusa Dua are dotted with boutiques and memorable restaurants.
This sophisticated self-contained retreat is something of a microcosm of the Balinese way. Linked by elevated walkways, suites border on the cavernous and are traditionally decorated in a soothing palette of browns, beige, cream and honey, their wooden four-poster beds draped in white veils. Bathrooms feature sunken baths, outside which lush foliage is prettily illuminated at night. On the outdoor terraces, beneath a protective canopy lie luxurious day beds. Eight suites have private pools (should you rather not share the main 30 metre one), as does the Amanusa Suite which enjoys the most privileged views of the ocean.
Dining is a similarly indulgent affair. Offering sweeping views of Bali, The Terrace serves Thai and Indonesian menus. Romance surrounds the frangipani fringed courtyard of The Italian Restaurant, open only for dinner. Although there's no spa as such, resident masseuses provide a wide range of Balinese beauty and massage treatments in the privacy of your room, in the spa suite or on the beach.
