Amanusa lies in splendid seclusion beside the Bali Golf and Country Club, separating it from the ocean, on the country's verdant southern peninsula, just two kilometres off the eastern tip of Java. Nearby, the bougainvillea-lined streets of Nusa Dua are dotted with boutiques and memorable restaurants.
This sophisticated self-contained retreat is something of a microcosm of the Balinese way. Linked by elevated walkways, suites border on the cavernous and are traditionally decorated in a soothing palette of browns, beige, cream and honey, their wooden four-poster beds draped in white veils. Bathrooms feature sunken baths, outside which lush foliage is prettily illuminated at night. On the outdoor terraces, beneath a protective canopy lie luxurious day beds. Eight suites have private pools (should you rather not share the main 30 metre one), as does the Amanusa Suite which enjoys the most privileged views of the ocean.
Dining is a similarly indulgent affair. Offering sweeping views of Bali, The Terrace serves Thai and Indonesian menus. Romance surrounds the frangipani fringed courtyard of The Italian Restaurant, open only for dinner. Although there's no spa as such, resident masseuses provide a wide range of Balinese beauty and massage treatments in the privacy of your room, in the spa suite or on the beach.

Amanusa's design is influenced by ancient Hindu poetry, the surrounding miles of breathtaking views and by the spiritual and naturally peaceful lifestyle. Enclosed in a secluded self-contained retreat, Amanusa is a relaxing microcosm of all things Balinese and seeks to ensure a complete respite from the hectic pace of the world at large. As a result, rooms are spacious, authentically decorated in a soothing palette of browns, beige, cream and honey.
All the 35 thatched-roof suites have wooden four-poster beds, draped in white veils, with detailed attention to the essential ingredients for peaceful sleep. The cavernous bathrooms feature sunken baths with directional lighting, enhancing the foliage alongside. Each suite is enclosed in a sensuous tropical setting and an outdoor shower is built into a high paras-stone wall, seeding soft moss and fragrant white flowers beneath an overhang of ochre and salmon-pink bougainvillea. The walled garden courtyards are private and romantic, offering day and night alfresco dining. Every suite has an outdoor terrace with a comfortable daybed beneath a protective canopy.
All suites have round tables for private dining, a sunken indoor bath, outdoor shower, a garden courtyard and a terrace with a spacious canopied daybed.
These eight suites have private swimming pools and a spacious terrace.
The Terrace offers sweeping views of Bali, embracing the golf course, the Indian Ocean, Nusa Dua and the Bukit, which is Bali's southern peninsula.
The Terrace - serves Thai and Indonesian cuisines, with the addition of Continental fare during the day.
The Italian Restaurant - offers seating in an elegant room of high ceilings and leaded windows as well as in a romantic outdoor courtyard among flowering frangipani trees, overlooking the pool.
Pool Side - Here, the dining is alfresco beneath a covered colonnade and lunchtime fare includes sandwiches, salads and traditional Indonesian snacks.
The Bar is opposite the Terrace on the same level and offers similar views.
The white-sand beach is one of Bali's best and is fringed by a coral reef that provides a safe lagoon for swimming and seasonal watersports. The large 30m blue pool is bordered by a bougainvillea-covered trellis, flowering frangipani trees and a high paras-stone wall.
The Library specialises in books on Indonesian art and culture. A selection of novels, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs and board games, as well as a laptop for Internet access are also available.
A variety of massage treatments includes the two-hour Balinese lulur body scrub - a traditional exfoliation and body polishing treatment which concludes with a Balinese massage and luxurious herbal bath. Beauty treatments using 100% natural organic products unique to Aman include facials, pedicures and manicures. Amanusa's Reiki master is on hand to redress any energy imbalances and a reflexologist is available once a week.
Massage - Amanusa's resident masseuses mix traditional Balinese massage with Swedish massage and acupressure. Massage is available in the privacy of your suite, in the specially-designated massage suite or on one of the Beach bales.
Tennis Courts - Amanusa's two all-weather tennis courts are floodlit for evening play. Attendants are available as playing partners or ball boys. A bale is located between the courts for shady breaks of iced chrysanthemum tea and other refreshments.
Swimming Pool - The large 30m blue pool is bordered by a bougainvillea-covered trellis, flowering frangipani trees and a high paras-stone wall.
The resort has meeting facilities for up to 30 people and is a special venue for occasions such as weddings, birthdays and family reunions. For guests wanting a deeper insight into Balinese life and culture, Amanusa will arrange seminars or presentations.
Four Seasons Resort Bali at Sayan is a supremely tranquil retreat in the sacred Ayung River valley. There are several championship golf courses relatively nearby.
