Burj Al Arab

Soaring 321 metres above the Gulf from a private, man-made island less than 20km south of Dubai City, the sail-shaped Burj Al Arab is one of the most admired megastructures in the world. Until recently the tallest all-suite hotel in the world, it remains one of the most extravagant where guests are greeted on arrival by a brigade of highly-trained butlers.

Set on 27 storeys, its 202 duplex suites span two floors and feature a pillow menu, ‘his and hers' Hérmes products, a walk-in shower and a jacuzzi spa bath prepared by the butler. Opulent Arabian interiors in marble and gold leaf evoke an exotic atmosphere of exclusivity. Every suite enjoys enviable views of the Arabian Gulf.

Visual theatre prevails throughout this palace of opulence. Entry to Al Mahara - the Burj Al Arab's award-winning subterranean seafood restaurant is by a virtual submarine ride. A magnificent oval aquarium faces you on arrival. Conversely, suspended 200 metres above the ocean on the top floor, Al Muntaha offers nose-against-glass views of the Dubai coastline.

If the lavish spa, pool and health club are not enough, you're welcome to use the facilities of the Madinat Jumeirah Resort and Jumeirah Beach Hotel, a buggy ride away, where there's lots for children to do. VIP transfers are available by helicopter or Rolls-Royce.

HOW ABOUT

The Sandpiper, Barbados

Most hotels on the west coast of Barbados are more than a walk to anywhere but the beach. The Sandpiper, however, backs on to a thin strip of silken sand just outside Holetown.
