Newly re-designed
In the heart of Union Square
Luxurious design by Phillippe Starck
Exemplary Service
San Francisco's grande dame in the heart of colourful Union Square has been firmly part of city life since it was built in 1913. It's still a talking point and well-loved meeting place in its latest reincarnation as a stunning Italian Renaissance-style collaboration between ultra hip design gurus Ian Schrager and Philippe Starck.
Guests are ushered in from theatreland's Geary Street by model-like doormen in grey designer uniforms. In the cavernous lobby, muted walls offset surrealist furniture, including a 7ft Louis XV-style chair and a sculpted bronze hearth towering above a fire.
By contrast, the 363 rooms are done in calm ivories, greys and lavenders, silks, leathers and velvets. Floor to ceiling mirrors reflect English sycamore sleigh beds and the rosy Bay Area light.
Clift's famous Art Deco bar, the Redwood Room (panelled with a single giant redwood, legend has it), has been reinvented as an exceptionally elegant, red velvet space where smart San Franciscans mingle while waiting for a seat at the hand-etched Venetian mirror communal table in the hotel's acclaimed Asia de Cuba restaurant.
Open 24-hours a day, the gym offers private trainers. In-room massages and spa services can be indulged in, on request.
