Sister hotel to the super-exclusive Parrot Cay in the Turks & Caicos, this private island retreat lies on one of the Maldives’ less developed areas South Malé Atoll - a 30 minute speedboat ride from the airport. A resort that’s in love with the warm, pure water enveloping it, it has one of the best dive sites in the Maldives to one side; a quiet reef made for snorkelling on the other. Villas and suites are elegant and airy. Some are inspired by the dhoni boats the local fishermen use, adjoined by simple wooden walkways built above the shallow sea. The view from the wide platform beds and bathrooms with double sinks is directly out to the mirror flat horizon. Out on to the private terrace you’re free to slip straight into the inviting warm water. Cocoa Island guests eat fresh specialities such as lobster, caught locally and cooked in the Keralan style. At the main restaurant, Ufaa, diners eat with their feet in the sand beneath the mesmerising Maldivian sky.
