Mandarin Oriental Tokyo

The award-winning Mandarin Oriental is in a luxury league of its own, occupying ten floors of the soaring Nihonbashi Mitsui Tower at the literal centre of Tokyo. Speed up 38 floors by private elevator, and you step out virtually into a panorama of the capital - a stunning sight presented at every opportunity. On clear days, you can see Mount Fuji.

There's an extraordinary sense of space here. Not only are the futuristic rooms (floors 30 to 36) some of the largest in Japan but the boundaries of the rooms dissolve with the expanse of glass walls and endless views across the city.

Four restaurants range from stylish modern Cantonese at Sense and French-inspired dining at Signature (both on the 37th floor, with stop-in-your-tracks views) to an eclectic all-day menu at K'shiki on the top floor. There are also three bar/lounge areas, including the plush Oriental Lounge, where afternoon tea is part of life for Tokyo's movers and shakers.

On the 37th floor lies a huge and serene ‘spa in the sky' with luxurious separate male and female relaxation lounges, beside the SPa's Heat & Water experience, where vitality pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi facilities can be enjoyed. There's a heavenly fitness centre too.
