The Sheraton Algarve stands proudly among flower-filled grounds on an imposing wooded clifftop near Albuferira overlooking miles of unspoiled Atlantic Ocean coastline. Taking its inspiration from traditional local architecture - low, whitewashed and elegant - it exemplifies how a deluxe resort can be built in harmony with its environment.
To stay in one of its 215 luxury guest rooms is to experience a traditional Arab décor of lavish fabrics, potted plants, carved headboards, and exotic tiled walls. All have a balcony or terrace and 24-hour room service and connecting rooms are available for families.
Kids have their very own supervised ‘village' called the Porto Pirata, a safe area near the 9-hole golf course dominated by two wooden pirate ships, and equipped with a pool, bouncy castle and indoor craft activities with friendly nannies. For older children, there's a daily programme of events including volleyball and football. Porto Pirata is open April to October, as well as during the Christmas and Easter holidays.
There's a lovely beach, reached by a glass lift that slides down the red sandstone cliffs, then a short stroll to the golden sands, heated indoor and outdoor pools, tennis courts, a beauty salon, fitness centre and spa. Dining choices cover the whole range from poolside snacks by the pool to an
all-day restaurant to seasonal fine wining and dining overlooking the ocean.
