Sofitel Centara Grand Resort stands in a tropical garden along a beautiful four mile stretch of Hua Hin, Thailand’s Royal beach resort (discovered in early 1920s by King Rama VII who promptly decided to use it as an escape from Bangkok). Its 207 rooms and 42 villas are distinctly colonial in style - high ceilings, polished hardwood period furniture and beautiful Thai silks evoke the glamour of the 1920s. Villas feature over-sized bathrooms and five metre marble private pools. No fewer than seven restaurants are found here, among them the alfresco Palm Seafood Pavilion and Railway Brasserie. The Museum Lounge, overlooking the gardens, serves afternoon tea and long, cool cocktails, while Hagi brings out the theatre of food with live Japanese cooking, plus teppanyaki and superb sushi. If you’re still hungry in the morning the cosy Rajpruek Lounge serves a rather good American buffet. Part of the impressive gardens, the Cenvaree Spa has nine treatment rooms and outdoor massage offering traditional Thai rituals with Western therapies. Top attractions close by include Klai Kangwon Palace (built by the aforementioned king for his queen), and the Sam Roi Yot, Thailand’s first Coastal National Park and home to magnificent grey limestone mountains.
