The Sandpiper

Most hotels on the west coast of Barbados are more than a walk to anywhere but the beach. The Sandpiper, however, backs onto a strip of silken sand just outside Holetown, home to several restaurants, bars and shops. Its intimate appeal makes it one of the most desirable small hotels in the Caribbean, with much of its charm attributed to Wayne and Karen Capaldi, who run it with meticulous attention to detail without sacrificing the relaxed character of the Caribbean. Flowering bougainvillea hang from the terraces of the 47 luxurious low rise units. The one and two bedroom suites are perfect for families with a separate living area with a sofa bed.

If the complimentary windsurfing, snorkelling, water-skiing, kayaking and Hobie Cat aren't enough for you and the kids, there's always the playground and beauty salon at sister hotel Coral Reef Club, a few minutes drive away. Attached to the playground is a crèche for two to eight year olds, open Monday to Friday, 2.30 - 4.30pm. Booking is necessary.

The restaurant serves award-winning Caribbean and seafood dishes in an intimate, West Indian vaulted ceiling setting which opens onto the beautiful gardens. A children's room service dinner is available between 5.30pm and 7pm. For babies, the chef is happy to make freshly blended food.

Guests under twelve are not accommodated between 15 January and 15 March. Under fives are asked not to be in the dining room or lounge after 7pm. Guests of the Sandpiper are able to use the new spa at the resort's sister hotel Coral Reef Club.
