There are few things more soul affecting than seeing the magnificent creatures of South Africa in their natural habitats. A safari here is a once in a lifetime experience. Sir Richard Branson’s Ulusaba Private Game Reserve is set in the heart of the Sabi Sand game reserve on the border of the sprawling Kruger National Park. Here, guests enjoy the privilege of 13,500 hectares of unspoilt, game rich bush in near solitude. Guests can share their time between the two lodges; one on the summit of a rocky hill looking out over miles of bushy grassland plain and the dramatic Drakensberg Mountain range in the far distance. For a true treat, the new Makwela Suites at Rock Lodge will not disappoint. These two huge suites each enjoy a free standing bath, comfortable lounge, spacious deck and private infinity plunge pool, overlooking the majestic African Savannah. Built along the banks of the dry Mabrak riverbed, Safari Lodge rooms are reached by swing bridges. The tree house style spaces inspire a humbling sense of being at the heart of life in the wilderness, especially when its magnificent creatures stroll past on their way to the nearby watering hole.
When not occupied on a walking safari or twice daily game drive, take a dip in one of the two swimming pools or indulge in an in-room massage or beauty treatment (both lodges have a boutique spa and fitness space). After dinner enjoy a spot of star gazing at the bush observatory.

One part of the reserve is perched high on the summit of a koppie (rocky hill) and they call it Rock Lodge. Here you'll find spectacular panoramic views over miles of bush, the wildlife roaming within, and the beauty of the lowveld (bushy grassland plain) below, all set against a backdrop of the Drakensberg Mountain range far in the distance.
The other of Ulusaba's luxury safari accommodation offerings is the Safari Lodge which is built along the banks of the dry Mabrak riverbed. Rooms are built 'tree house' style, and you really get the feeling of being at the heart of life in the bush. Your room will provide fascinating views of the animals as they stroll past on their way to the nearby watering hole.
These rooms are closest to the pools and main house. Each room has a balcony which overlooks the watering hole.
River rooms are located in the Safari Lodge site, and are linked to the resort by a connecting bridge.
Dine by firelight, candlelight or star light - feast on a traditional Braai in the heart of the Bush, or sample the local specialties overlooking the animals wandering by below. Let Ulusaba know what you like and they'll be happy to make it for you. Breakfasts and lunches are organized ‘restaurant style', but in the evenings guests dine together at communal tables, comparing notes on the animals they spotted that day. Of course, if you'd like a more intimate experience, the reserve will be delighted to organize private dining for you.
